No matter which design elements you choose - such as font style, images, audio, video - it must always facilitate learning. Stop poor elearning design by making sure your imagery and design elements add more than 'bling' and 'sparkle'.
1. Always use meaningful and impactful images
When selecting images for elearning, always ensure the image reflects the meaning of the content. For example, if your content involves instructions on first aid techniques, you should pick images that relate to that topic, such as an ambulance or a first aid box. Images should always be high-quality photographs. You should create a good hierarchy when designing elearning: remember that the user will be drawn to the image first and then read the title and body copy after. The image draws in the viewer’s attention but does not over-power the text.
2. Begin with a storyboard and a template
When designing elearning, planning is vital. It is better to plan well at the beginning than have to fix major mistakes later on in the game. Communicating with instructional designers and SMEs early on makes for a good start. Include conversations about layout, colour palettes, fonts, images, interactions and animations so that everyone in the team knows what to expect. 3. Always have an adequate amount of white space
As much as we want to give our readers as much information as we can, allowing enough white space will lead to a better user experience, helping learners enjoy the information and take more of it in. White space enhances the presentation of effective elearning. Breaking up content – into manageable paragraphs, headings and different slides – is another effective technique for capturing the learner’s attention for longer.
4. Use colour cleverly
Don’t deploy a rainbow of colours; instead, stick to your colour palette and use colours that complement one another. If you are designing with a brand in mind, make sure you use colours associated with that brand. The importance of elearning is in providing information, so ensure you use colour in a way that makes the information clear. Use lighter colours for backgrounds and darker colours for fonts. 5. Be consistent
Consistency is crucial in making a course look and feel professional. Keeping conflicting design elements to a minimum will mean fewer distractions for the learner.
