Engaging your audience. It’s what everyone wants. Content creators want it, leaders want it, and the audience really, really wants it.

Some recent statistics show that engaged learners:

      • Can generate 218% higher income per employee.
      • Can enjoy a 24% higher profit margin.
      • Have 10x more sustainable impact on growth, productivity and profitability.
So no wonder we are always chasing it. But achieving a lasting impact with content could be simpler than you think. Outside of the newest platforms, technology and other noise – it can all hinge on some basic principles of design.
An experienced, sophisticated learning developer will always apply the principles of human centred design to learning experience. It’s a technique that puts real people at the centre of the development process, enabling you to create learning solutions that resonate and are tailored to your audience's needs.

Here are 5 tips on how you can incorporate human-centered design thinking when creating learning solutions.

      Tip 1: Sell the benefits

When crafting your learning outcomes, put your sales head on. Include outcomes that focus on the direct impact of the training to your learners and what they will gain from the training. Link the business ambition and the lives of the learner.

      Tip 2: Empower your learners

Give your learners a voice during the design phase. Remember, the training you are designing is for them and their input is just as important as your stakeholders. Set up focus groups to gain an understanding of what they liked / disliked about the training. Ask for feedback on navigation, structure, tone of voice and content. Participation is not only key to the quality of the training but also helps create and maintain a positive environment and learning culture.

Tip 3: Incorporate voices from the business

Digital learning can often feel isolating and detached. Using real life stories from people in the business is a powerful way to add an element of human connection and make the training more relatable to the learner. Using pre-recorded video and audio can still enable a learner to feel a human connection with the speaker.

      Tip 4: Make it personal

Personalising training is a great way to boost learner engagement. Use assessments or role filters before taking a course to gauge existing knowledge or skill level. This will help create ‘zero waste learning’ – the learner will feel like their time is valued and they will only need to complete training that is relevant to them.

Tip 5: Provide an opportunity for feedback

Post-training evaluation helps you understand how well the learners received the program and provides a valuable insight into the program’s effectiveness. It can not only help you identify the positives and tweak the training with improvements, but it also enhances employee retention and engagement.

You want to create engaging learning programmes. They need to increase your learner engagement, improve learning outcomes, and deliver long-term skills. But your budget ‘is what it is’, perhaps you have already wisely invested in a new learning platform – or some necessary classroom training interventions.
