Compliance just got interesting
It’s not often I’d say this, but I think I might actually be excited to talk about compliance training.
I was doing some final reviews of our new suite of compliance resources yesterday – Comply – and we can be really proud of them. Compliance training has such a bad reputation, and deservedly so, based on many of the courses I’ve seen in the past.11:28
I know – tedious, grey, endless ‘Click Next’ stuff that workplace learners had to sit through so that the compliance box could be ticked… It was so groan-inducing. Whereas our courses really stand out – we turn compliance on its head in the best possible way!11:30

I checked the Oxford dictionary to see what the official definition of ‘comply’ is. It's twofold: 1. Do what someone wants or tells you to do. 2 Meet specified standards. I think most of the compliance training that’s out there currently is about the former – forcing people to read content to tick a box. I'd like to think that our Comply suite is more about the latter – helping people to understand the importance of upholding standards and the very real consequences of not doing so.11:37
Yes, we definitely show that there’s a ‘why’ to Comply...
Apparently, the original meaning of ‘comply’ was ‘to fulfil, to accomplish’. I think most people's associations are more like ‘get-it-out-of-the-way-asap’!11:38
Yeah. The default position is that it’s something to be endured. So, how would we market our courses if we were writing the copy? What would we say our ‘Comply’ offering delivers?11:38
Hmmmm... Well, let’s start at the very beginning, as Julie Andrews says. C-O-M-P-L-Y – the building blocks of the word itself… The C stands for consequences: we show learners clearly the importance of industry standards and regulations, and the repercussions of not adhering to them.11:39
Here’s a tagline – ‘Comply: big on why, small on dry!’11:41
I like it! And our C also covers case studies and customisation...11:44
Yip. The courses do focus on the whys and the consequences, as you say. I think those elements really help learners to understand why it’s important to know this content... It gives them a reason to take the course, over and beyond ‘because you have to’.
Case studies are another great example of that, too. Case studies and scenarios really help learners to see the human and real-life impact of actions. So much more effective than just telling people not to do x and y11:47
Yes – we’re more about the O! O for original – we offer a fresh take on the old! We take what seems like dead boring facts and figures – like about legislation, regulations, statistics – and bring them to vibrant life... Through our M! Can you guess what I'm driving at?!?11:49
For M, I think our big selling point is multimedia. So many compliance courses are just text and ‘Click Next’. Having a mixture of graphics, audio, animations, video, interactions, case studies, and questions, just makes the whole experience so much more engaging and interactive.11:51
I know. I'd actually enjoy taking these courses. They have interactivity, colour, music, movement – even high drama (see Office Health and Safety, people – hot tip!).11:53

That was Blockbusters, I think! You don't get to choose your own letters on Countdown… Would be a very different programme if you could, though!!12:17

Back to P, after that strange diversion into Blockbusters v Countdown. I think we could throw focus on principles into the mix. As in, we focus on the principles and best practice.12:23
Principles is where it’s at, yes! It's that 'why' again...12:24
Yes, it's important to get that balance right between just telling people what not to do and telling/showing the right way to comply.
Proactive... That could be another one. Our courses highlight how every employee needs to proactively take responsibility for compliance issues.12:27
You've hit the nail on the head there – our case studies, customisation and animations show the real-life relevance of this stuff... Whereas before, compliance seemed pointless to so many people – certainly in its long-drawn-out traditional formats.
Prioritises could be another – we focus on the salient points in each topic, bearing microlearning best practice in mind and keeping the learning succinct and memorable – 'sticky'!12:32

Wot Lse!!! Just like our focus on real-life situations, we put people at the heart of the material. I feel that our sleek, modern resources are more a consumer-led experience than an off-puttingly traditional work task. We've all been there; we know what the user experience was like in the past, and we're passionate about taking it to bold new territory.
Like you said, Niamh – it's actually easy to be positive and motivated about our Comply suite! Loads of people at the Learning Technologies event in London recently commented on how great the courses look.12:38
Agreed. The learner experience is so important. Just because you’ve got a captive audience, doesn't mean you should take advantage of that with poor-quality content.
